NEWSLETTER ROUND 14

Hopefully everyone enjoyed a safe and fun filled school holiday period and are looking forward to the remaining 5 matches of the year. This week is a little quieter at Cawley park as we have no Friday night games and no SSG hubs, although we still do have a big Saturday planned with 4 teams playing down there. It will be a Russell Vale Super Saturday as we have our inaugural Trivia night at Woonona Bowling Club!! With 15 tables now confirmed it is shaping up as a great night. Remember it is not to late to get a table together and payment and confirmation of tables will be taken up to this Thursday night- so don’t miss out!!!

Rd 13 U11.3 v Tarra

There’s another old saying in England “a game of two halves” and it certainly applied to this match.

Due to holidays and injuries both sides only had 11 players each, so there were no substitutions to interrupt the flow of the game. In the first 5 mins the Cobras found themselves in the unusual position of being 2-0 down before they had even had a shot at goal. Slowly they worked their way back into the game and when one of Harrison Benn’s lethal corners found the back of the net to make it 2-1 it appeared the momentum was back with Russell Vale. However Tarrawanna caught us flat footed at the back for the third consecutive time regaining their two goal cushion with a 3-1 lead. Most teams would have capitulated after this set back but not our little Cobras. In the few minutes left leading up to HT, a free kick from Harrison Benn somehow stayed out but in the goal mouth scramble that followed Jordan Errington was on hand to tuck the ball away 3-2. Then right on the very stroke of HT, Jordan Errington burst into the box and from an acute angle lobbed the keeper to pull the game back to 3-3.

Ground Condition and Training

Michael Benn and myself have discussed the current ground condition at Cawley Park. The western side of the main field is very wet and muddy at present, and from my experience of playing on it on the weekend, not real good for trying to play progresssive passing football!!!!. Michael and I have decided to ask all who use Cawley Park that we avoid the western side as much as possible.

The eastern side is very good at present so we would encourage all who use the main field to try and utilise the eastern side of the field. If space is at a premium, and light is appropriate (more associated with SSG teams), we encourage you to move over the creek and use the space over there.

Your cooperation in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Further, I think we need to put this in place until further notice, or until the grounds dry out.

Regards

Michael Benn and Steve Smart

Round 13 Draw updates

I’ve just updated the draw page.

U9’s and U10’s games have been confirmed.

U13.1 is definitely 10:40 at Helensbugh on Saturday

U13.1 has been changed to 11:00 at Dapto on Sunday.

Rd 12 U11.3 v Warilla

This was a long way short of our best performance of the season but I take part of the blame for changing the team every ten minutes and upsetting the rhythm in an attempt to rest players for Sunday’s Semi Final. Although the team looked lethargic on the night we did score five goals, collected another 3 points, maintained our winning streak and position at the top of the league. It was a shame our normal fluent passing was off, our tackling was non-existent and our movement was static because there was a good crowd at Cawley Park to cheer the lads on. It was the Cobras first competitive match under floodlights so maybe they were nervous or had their minds on the Semi Final, who knows?

FSC Plate Semi U11.3 v Kiama

The best team doesn’t always win in a cup match (ie Barcelona v Chelsea – Semi Champions League) but in this instance you would have to say Kiama deserved to reach the final just on “perseverance” alone. Poor referee time keeping aside (3 minutes short both halves and no 5 minutes of injury time when the Kiama keeper broke his wrist) did cost us 11 minutes of playing time but I don’t think it would have changed the result…..it was just not our day!
