Rd 14 U11 Girls v Woonona

Russell Vale 3 Woonona 0

Today we came up our arch enemy Woonona a team that has beaten us twice this season including a 4-1 grubbing at Woonona last time we met.  The game started well and we took early control with Samantha going close by missing an open goal.  As the game progressed Woonona showed there speed up front with a close couple of calls.  The midfield of Remi and Jasmin began to control the centre of the park giving our forwards a chance to take advantage of the size of the ground.  A great break away by the midfield allowed for Samantha to grab some room and a great finish by Samantha made the score one nil.  The defence was solid again today with Emily, Eden, Jezebel and the strong tackling of Sarah ensured that Tara had little to do.  Woonona came very close when they hit the post but we regained our focus and where unlucky not to score a couple more before half time.

We are usually a little sleepy after half time but today we came out all fired up we continued to push forward and a great attack and excellent football gave Jasmin a great cross across from Jasmin was beautiful timed by Samantha who struck the ball sweet from the near the penalty spot giving the keeper no chance.  This was certainly a settler for my nerves.  We continued to push forward with Brianna, faith, Isabel, Charlie, Stella, and Kyla all playing great soccer. Today all the girls listened and showed that they have the skills to remain at the top of the table.

With a few minutes left Jasmin scored our third goal and ensuring the three points to keep us at the top of the table.    Tara in goals today was great and made some vital stops coming of her line.  We continued to attack and should have scored a few more but today I was more than happy with the three goals that we scored.  After talking to the Woonona Coach he gave us the compliment that we are the yard stick and are playing very well.  So girls lets all get to training remain focus and build on a great win today.  Everyone enjoy your return to school.

Cheers

Draw Page Updated for Rd 14

Hi everyone, hope you are all enjoying the school holiday break. I know quite a few of you have taken advantage of the various School holiday clinics. Well done and keep up the hard work! The draw page has been updated for this weekend.

Rd 3 U13G v Woonona

Our local derby was alot closer than the scoreline suggests and the Team’s performance improved noticeably from the last time these 2 Teams met.

Last time Woonona beat us 6-0 and this time it was 4-1.

Woonona scored 2 goals each half and there were a couple of lucky ones in amongst our opposition’s total. Senior referee’s on the Worlds biggest stage missed England’s goal against Germany at the World Cup that hit the cross bar and bounced over the line. Our astute referee didnt miss Woonona’s identical shot even though he was a long way from goal and was probably more persuaded by a woonona parent running the line- who with eyesight like his may find himself at the next World Cup!!

That being said Woonona were the better Team and definitely deserved their win. Their positional play was stronger than ours and they used the windy conditions better than we did in both halves. Keely scored our only goal and it was a nicely taken left foot shot at goal. Great stuff Keely!

It is great to see the continued improvement in the girls game and their undoubted skills were showcases again today against a very good Woonona side. With 5 rounds to go it is going to be a challenging run home but one that the players and supporters are certainly up for!!

Cheers

Rd 13 U8 Green v Bally

To use a cliché, this was definitely “a match of two halves!”

In the first half we struggled with our intensity. There was a lot of ball watching going on, and not a lot of our usual hard running. Perhaps it was the later game time? Biorhythms perhaps? There were glimpses of our normal selves with a few penetrating runs out of midfield. But unfortunately once the ball turned over we just sat back and watched it go the other way and failed to chase and tackle. It took a combination of luck and some good last minute efforts from Ben (who was subbing for us this week) to go into halftime nil all.

While we had our oranges (thanks again Madeline!), Coach reminded us that we come to play football, not just watch it. The message sunk in!

After the break we ran. And we ran. And we ran. Every Russell Vale kid ran as hard as can be. As a result we benefited by an overwhelming majority of field position. Whenever the ball did come into our half, either Bailey, Ben or Stuart took control and sent us forward. Anakin, Jackson, Josh and Tom controlled the middle. It was only a matter of time before we took advantage and scored. Both goals came from corners. Both times, the opposition failed to handle the high ball coming at them. The first goal was an own goal off a lifted knee. The second came from a free kick awarded after an opposition player handled the ball. And talk about free kicks! The opposition crowded the goal line while the referee placed the ball about 8 meters out just of centre. The strike from Josh would have split an adult in half had they been in the way! Despite the crowd in front of goal, the ball went whizzing past the Balgownie kids heads (lucky it missed them!) at about a hundred kilometres an hour! The crowd went wild!

We finished with a 2-0 win, and Coach was very pleased with our effort. While the second half saw many outstanding performances, our medal went to Tom and the trophy went to Anakin. Both boys made some great supporting runs and only just failed to score on breaks, while they were often back in defence to help clear the danger area. It was Anakin’s corners that caused so much trouble, while Tom’s control on the ball is setting a standard for the team.

Friday 2 July

Russell Vale 1 v 0 Thirroul

On a bitterly cold night the only goal came in the first two minutes of the game and was the result of a superb passing move from one end of the pitch to the other with Matt Nelson laying the final ball into the box for Nathan Hennessy to run in and place the ball into the corner of the net. This should have opened up the floodgates but for some reason the second goal never came even though Matt Nelson went very close a couple of times. Then towards the end of the first half Hayden Brown had two free kicks, the first was brilliantly saved by the keeper and the second saw Chris Behan sneak in at the back post but his first time shot was just off target.

When the second half began it was noticeable that Thirroul had reshuffled their pack, the better players were now in the back four and they had two holding midfielders. They were going for damage limitation and hoping to catch Russell Vale on the counter attack. Russell Vale continued to have most of the possession and whenever they came close to the Thirroul box the defence just hoofed it as far as possible. Coen Mackay and Dylan Andrews both had very good games at fullback for Russell Vale and tried to support the attack down the flanks at every opportunity. Unfortunately as the game wore on frustration crept into the Cobras play and Thirroul grew in confidence sensing they might be able to steal a point. However it was the Cobras that came closest to scoring when from a Hayden Brown cross Shae Morgan was unable to direct his header on target and soon after Jordan Woods missed a similar chance from an acute angle. Even though our football lost some cohesion in the second half and at times we even lost our shape it should be noted that we lost at home 1-3 to this lot last season so in that respect it was an improvement.

Another top effort by the kids against a team that gave us a hard workout in the first round and at the Gala Day. Early morning starts aren’t usually our thing, especially with SamM and ThomasM out of action with the holidays.

Mark was playing up front and drew a foul inside the box in the first couple of minutes. TK stepped up to calmly give us a bit of breathing space. They played some good football in the first half and were rewarded with another two goals. One to Ryan after a good run up the left and another to SamL who used his head for a change (literally).

I think it is fair to say we were under a bit more pressure in the second half, but the kids maintained the composure and slotted home anothe rtwo goals. Ryan with anothe rtwo good runs up the left habd side. He put the first one away himself and was dragged down outside the box on the last one. TK took the free kick and buried it in the top corner.

The kids are playing very consistently. I took a sneek peek at the parent points and it’s a reflection on how well all the kids are playing that most of them are getting points, it is really spread out which is good to see.

SamL stayed as the central Striker the whole game in SamM’s absence and was very strong on the ball. Mark played on the right in the first half and left midfield in the second and kept going all game. Ryan’s two goals were a reward for his strong running with the ball. Matty D had a torrid time taking the ball up and a set of sore ankles to show for it at the end. Wilson covered plenty of miles across the park. Reuben had his usual strong passing game in teh first half and slotted in well at the back in teh second. Jas and TK kept thing together at the back very well. Dean got forward a lot in attack we just need to keep working on the recovery when things break down.

We conceded our third goal of the year which is actually a great achiev, ent. It could have easily been a couple more except Braeden did his bit with a couple of great reflex saves.

We’ll be one or two short for most games between now and the finals so there will be a lot of work needed to keep our good record in tact. Hopefully we won’t have the curse of injuries as we did last year!

Rd 13 U11 Girls v Bally

Friday night brought the girls their first ever night game. It was a cold night but a nice night to play soccer. After a strong performance the week before downing Thirroul 4 nil the girls were full of confidence as results had ensured that we remained on first position by three points.

Tonight we were up against a Balgownie side that we had defeated in the first round. AS the game progressed it appeared that it was going to be a hard fought struggle after a few minutes Stella was injured and had to be replaced. Balgownie were a lot more physical and did not pull out of any tackles. Our determination in front of goals paid dividends when Jasmine listened once to her dad and had a great shot away from the keeper to make it one nil. Once again our defence of Sarah who was solid as a rock, Jezebel, Emily and Eden kept the Bally girls well away from Tara who never touched the ball once in the first half. Our midfielders of Remi, Sammy, Faith, Brianna, Isabel and Jasmine kept the middle of the nice and tight. Our Forwards Kyla, Charlie and Stella done a great job chasing down the ball when the opportunity was there.

For the second half Tara entered the field of play and was strong at the back and Jezebel went into goals it was another great defensive show as Jez never touched the ball once. A great shot by Jasmine made the score 2 nil and let me breathe a little bit easier. A strong tackle by a Balgownie player knocked Jasmine over and a sore knee was the result, hoping its not to serious. The last 15 minutes was a lot closer and Bally came very close but a great challenge by Sarah Stopped them. In the last few minutes a strong attack by Sammy saw her just miss she had to jump over the keeper and landed on her face as a true trooper she got up dusted herself down and kept going.
Tonight was a good lesson for the girls that at times there is tough physical teams to play and that to remain at the top we got to try that little bit harder. It was a great effort and the 3 points well deserved. Coaches effort went to Eden. Lets keep up the great work and thanks to parents who braved the weather on Friday night.

Cheers
Martin
