Rd 5 U16 v Bally

Sunday 9 May
Balgownie 2 v 6 Russell Vale

My lads are traditionally slow starters when it comes to an 8:30am K/O and today was no exception. Balgownie’s first goal came from a free kick and as it rebounded off the bar the home side was quickest to react. After good work from Joey Hodges and Matt Nelson the ball fell to Shae Morgan to put the Cobras back on level terms 1-1. Sadly it didn’t last long because from an excellently taken free kick Balgownie were back in the lead 2-1. Neither of Balgownie’s goals I hasten to add was the fault of Lauchlin Stewart (U15’s) who was kind enough to stand in as goalkeeper again. With 15 mins to go before HT we made three substitutions and spurred on by Hayden Brown in midfield Russell Vale suddenly looked a lot sharper. Shae Morgan had a hand in the next two goals setting up first Matt Nelson and then Jordan Woods to send the Cobras 3-2 up at the break.

Having snapped out of their lethargic mood Russelll Vale started the second half the same way they finished the first by banging in three more goals and with 20mins still to go the points were in the bag. The fourth goal came from Matt Nelson courtesy of another Shae Morgan pass. A good cross from Chris Behan teed up Jordan Woods for his second and an even better cross from Dylan Andrews provided Matt Nelson with the opportunity to complete his hat-trick before leaving the field with a groin strain. The scoreline could have been even more emphatic if Matthew Hennessy had his scoring boots on. He had one shot cleared off the line and another from close range was spooned over the bar, it can’t be long before he finally opens his account with the club. Towards the end of the game even Joel Dalmonte had a superb shot palmed away for safety before being taken off for a well deserved rest as the Cobras ran out the clock to record their first league win of the season.
