Rd 13 U14G v Oak Flats

The Russell Vale girls registered another win against a desparate and enthusiastic Oak Flats this morning. With both Teams eager for a win the match evenly contested for most off the first half. After continued pressure from the girls in Green and White, an Oak Flats defender used her hand instead of he feet and we were awarded a penalty kick about 20 minutes in to the half. Alyse, after some reasurrance from players, coaches and parents, much to everyones delight stepped up and calmy put it in the back of the net to make it 1-0. We had the better of the half but were unable to register another goal and our goalie Hannah was never really troubled.

After some wise words from the coaches at half time and the call from Alyse of our motto-“to go hard in the first half and harder in the second half” the stage was set for a big half of football. We didnt have it all our own way in the second half and Oak Flats knowing there season was on the line threw everything at the Russell Vale defence. Fortunately our defence held strong and whilst the second half of was not even close to our best half of football- the girls managed to grab another goal late in the half by Alyse to put the result beyond doubt. It was a gutsy win by the girls and most girls had bumps and bruises to show for it after the game!

Alyse who scored both goals was everywhere in attack and it is good to see her getting back to her goal scoring best! Her composure in front of goals and the power with which she hit home both goals were very impressive. Paige who had her best game this year was a constant threat in attack and defended strongly all match. Her controlled passing set up plenty of attacking raids and she used her greatest asset- her speed to beat opponents time and time again! Tegan and Ashleigh who shared our forward duties are 2 of the quickest girls in the Team and gave the Oak Flats defence head aches all game. Asheigh who has missed a few games with injury was great again today and was unlucky not to get a goal a few times and Tegan was strong in attack and defence- where she moved in the second half. All girls combined well and will score plenty more goals between now and the end of the competiton.

Our mid fielders of Jasmine, Jade and Brooke all had good games and were particularly strong in defence when it counted. Brooke’s control and defence especially when the oposition started knocking over our girls inspired her team mates to go hard- and fair- into the challenges and ensured we ended up with the ball more often than not. Her involvement, decision making and control was first class! Jasmine who is looking more and more comfortable in the centre mid field position each game and Jade ran all day and were there when big plays needed to be made! There passing selection was good and set up alot of our plays.

The girls up front and in the mid field all did a great job but today as a unit our defenders stole the show. Chloe and Emily who played central defending roles were both enormous today! Chloe gave her usual whole hearted , never say die skilful effort and she was ably supported by Emily. Emily like Paige up front had her best game in the cobras colour this year and that is saying something because she was close to the best player on the field last week. The improvement over the last 3-4 weeks in her game has been incredible and can be attributed to her attitude and work ethic at training. Sarah and Kylie who was playing out in the field after damaging her fingers in goals last week both hard and defended the flanks well. They both used the sidelines well and controlled the ball well.

A big thank you to our Goalie today- Hannah. With our regular goalie Kylie injured and playing in defence today, Hannah again stepped up to the mark and registered another clean sheet. Although she didnt get troubled a lot she did her job well and made some good gains with her kicks and set our attack going forward. Hannah is a great backup goalie to have and again showed her versatility across a number of positions.

Lastly a BIG BIG THANK YOU to everyone who stepped up and assisted with canteen, bbq and ground control duty today. It was good to see everyone pitching and helping out today and it made for a very enjoyable morning. A special Thanks to Steve (Chloes dad) who showed enormous courage under fire and bravery beyond the call of duty when asked by an over zealous linesman/ manager to move on a mother in law that was supporting her grand daughter in goals. Great job Steve and I think Carl owes you one!

My wife Renee video taped the game today and we will be looking to invite parents/players down to the ground for an open air viewing on the big screen at the ground in the near future. Our injured star Meg has been taking plenty of photos and we may be able to put a slide show together as well. I am sure Meg is doing a great job with the photos but we would much prefer to see her back out on the field so good luck with recovery Meg!! Once we organise a suitable time and date we will give you plenty of notice and make a night/ afternoon of it. If anyone has any suggestions on day/ night time etc, dont be backwards in coming forwards.

Thanks again for a great effort today and you all did that well that you can all have next weekend off and we will only see the girls down at training on the Thursday night this week. They may need the next few days to get over the tough contest and with no game this week, enjoy the next few days.

Michael
